5 Reasons Teachers Skip Professional Development Sessions  – And How to Bring Them Back!

​At the beginning of the academic year, you looked ahead, scheduled Professional Development days, worked hard to line up speakers and resources…. And you are noticing that participating is dwindling. Teachers are electing to stay in their classrooms to catch up on grading or reporting. Making the sessions mandatory improves this, but you haven’t had 100% participation in these sessions since early September.
 
As an administrator, you understand that developing your teachers is as important as supplying the correct classroom materials. Providing engaging PD sessions can have a measurable impact on teacher satisfaction (and ultimately student performance), as long as teachers are attending and benefiting from the resources you share. Teachers skip when they are over-committed with classroom duties, or don’t think the session will benefit them. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you make the most of your Professional Development time and dollars.

  1. “The subject matter doesn’t pertain to my classroom.” Great PD transcends subject matter; English teachers can take tips they learn in STEM PD and apply it to their classrooms because it is about bringing subject matter to life. Great PD drives creativity, and helps teachers bring their subject matter to life for their students.
  2. “The session is being put on by a teacher I work with every day.” If teachers aren’t sure if they would learn anything new from their closest peers, consider bringing in an expert. Pitsco Education supplies experts that will join you on site for half day, full day or two day PD sessions. Sessions are customizable – they can present on the subject matter of your choice. They are all classroom experts, and can provide a fresh perspective for all attendees.
  3. “The session is on policies and procedures. It’s not developing me as a teacher.” Look, Policies and Procedures are important – we get it. But, if you are using PD time for subject matter that can be explained in an email, you’ll lose your audience. Keep topics relevant to enhancing the skills of your staff.
  4. “Instead of feeding me information, I want to be engaged in the process.” So often, we forget to make PD sessions interactive. Teachers learn the same way their students do: by getting hands on and engaging. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make it effective. Putting Students First - Age Appropriate STEM for Elementary Students

Myra Hudson was doing a fine job teaching science in her fifth-grade classroom at Miller Park Elementary School in Omaha, Nebraska. With nearly 15 years of teaching experience, Hudson knew plenty about science, going all the way back to her days as a student in a traditional science lab. In fact, by all accounts, she was an above-average science teacher at the elementary level, where science often is viewed warily by teachers better versed in reading and math.

The disruption for Hudson occurred late last school year when she was asked to implement a pilot program of Pitsco elementary science Missions. To say she was skeptical would be an understatement. To say she was eager for the change would be an overstatement.

“The science lab I grew up with, there were sinks, Bunsen burners, no carpet, only wood,” said Hudson. “And then I got in here for the training, and I thought, ‘This doesn’t look like a science lab.’”
Instead, there were seven four-student workstations with colorful bins of inviting, age-appropriate materials, uniquely laid-out binders with detailed information and assessments set up in “windows” and “intervals,” and a specific role for each member of the Crew: Commander, Information Specialist, Communications Specialist, and Materials Specialist.

“Before the professional development, I thought, ‘I don’t see how this is going to tie in to our curriculum.’ I did the Forces Mission by myself because I wanted to see all four roles and how it would work so I could internalize it. It got to the point where it didn’t matter what I thought about it because it’s all about how the kids react to it,” Hudson said. “I thought, ‘Maybe I’m looking at this wrong because of the way I was taught.’ This is a science lab, and they do so much in here.”

How to Solve the Biggest Problems with Professional Development

The U.S. Department of Education reports PD can enhance student performance by as much as 21 percentile points. Not all Professional Development is created equal – PD is designed to address specific classroom needs, as well as specific educational content. How can you be sure that the PD is appropriate, and will achieve the end result (driving student performance)? We have a few keys to keep in mind when choosing or designing PD.

Professional Development – Types Matter:
·    Content Delivery – Options range from online to hands-on (and everything in between). For a successful PD session, blend pedagogy and hands-on applications so educators can build their confidence in delivering content to their students. Teachers will develop confidence for the content they will be leading their students through in classroom settings.
·    Professional Workshops – who delivers the content in your district PD sessions? Bringing in a content or curriculum professional can help teachers make connections they might not otherwise make. If you are looking for ideas (without the sales pitch) check out Pitsco’s STEM PD.
·    Product Workshops – when you bring new tools into the classroom, learning the ins and outs of the tool is key. But Professional Development should take it one step further and introduce best practices that will ultimately improve the student experience. ·    Make Time – don’t expect to cover every topic in one session. Successful PD happens over multiple sessions when teachers can absorb, implement and ask thoughtful questions.
