7 Essential Components of a Welding Program in the 21st Century

9/4/2015

Entering its second century, the welding profession is maturing, with many employers requiring more exposure to robotic automation, advanced equipment, exotic materials, specialized code certification, theory, welding procedure specifications and more. With advances and specialization, there is a growing need for welders who understand more than how to hold a torch and join metal.

As a result, public, private and skilled trade schools at every level are developing new education programs to designed to deliver the workforce industry is demanding today to remain globally competitive. In parallel, the need for skilled welding instructors and appropriate curriculum is growing as workforce development partnerships take hold and federal and state grant funds become available.

7 Essential Components of a Successful Welding Program

1.       Curriculum – A well-designed welding program will include curriculum that covers technique, industry trends, and introductions to the different areas of welding.
2.       Training Equipment – welding is a hands-on course, so real world training opportunities are a must. Training equipment should include an introduction to ARC welding, TIG welding, MIG welding, and FCAW welding.
3.       Welding Safety -- For an ARC welder, safety practices and personal protective equipment, when used properly, protect against potential hazards. A robust training program will inform and remind students about safe shop welding practices.
4.       Hands-On Practice – Many welding programs teach with a mix of virtual and hands-on training. Welding simulators, like the RealWeld Trainer will teach essential skills in a controlled environment, while Robotic Education Cell 2.0 will educate students on robotics in welding.
5.       Apprenticeship Opportunities – Different techniques widely vary in the field. Pairing an inexperienced welder with a more seasoned professional will allow students to gain industry knowledge while working toward certification. Apprenticeships often set up long-standing mentor relationships.
6.       Certification – industry recognized credentials, like certifications offered by Lincoln Electric, will add credibility to students as they enter the workforce.
7.       Career Connections – According to Chron, welders have a strong career outlook in the coming years, anticipating 15% growth in the field. Welding programs should have strong ties to the local workforce and supply a steady stream of qualified labor to local employers.

With welding, you can do a lot with it. There is also a lot that can go wrong if you don't have the right equipment. You need to always wear the proper safety equipment. This way, you can prevent harm to yourself since you are dealing with extreme heat. Teaching people about safety should be the first step.

Andy, you are absolutely correct - safety is always the first (and primary) consideration! At Moss, we work with Lincoln Electric to provide safe and effective welding training. Most solutions begin with virtual welding, which is much safer and easier to manage. Educators can control when they feel it is right to introduce students to actual welding equipment...usually after they have mastered the fundamentals and understand the safety considerations. Great comment!

My cousin is thinking of learning how to weld and I am glad that I found this article because I had no idea that there are so many factors to a welding program. The fact that you say welding programs include hands-on practice in a controlled environment would be perfect for my cousin because he likes to learn by doing things. Also, it makes sense that there should be internship and apprenticeship opportunities in good welding programs because you can gain industry knowledge and build mentor relationships.

It's fascinating to learn that welding programs are expanding to include such diverse areas as robotic automation and exotic materials as well as the standard safety certifications. I would imagine that if you want to have a specific job, you would want to customize your welding program to specialize in that one area. It would be interesting to see what customization and specialization is available at different trade schools.

Thanks for pointing out some essential components a welding program should have. I like that you mentioned that a good welding program should have a lot of hands-on practice. My husband is considering becoming a welder and I think that having a lot of hands-on action would help make sure that he was going to know what he was doing after he graduated.

With today's modern construction and fabrication, we know that metal is the most used in every house and building. A professional welder is the most in-demand in today's construction work because having a miss calculation in your welding projects could compromise all the projects.

That makes sense that welding safely will be focused on ARC welding safety. I need to get a welder for my sister's truck bed. She needs the bumper welded back on.

I found it interesting when you said many welding programs combine virtual and hands-on instruction. Welding simulators, such as the RealWeld Trainer, will teach critical skills in a controlled setting, while the Robotic Education Cell 2.0 will teach students about welding robots. I used to think differently about this and now it makes more sense. What you said about welder was really interesting to me.

It made sense when you mentioned that real-world training practices must be highlighted since welding is a hands-on job. My friend is working on a project that needs custom welding. She told me that she's looking for a company that can execute the welding outcome that they need for the project.

Thanks for helping me understand that various kinds of training equipment is needed in the course so that they have an idea of the real-world tasks they will have. With that in mind, those who wants to pursue a career in this industry should make sure that the institution they are going to will have such machines like the Lincoln electric equipment and more. In my opinion, it will definitely be for their safety and mastery of the device to ensure that they handle them correctly, especially when there are risks when doing welding tasks.
